How to Totally Kill Spam Comments On Your Blog

How to Prevent Spam Comments on Your Blog

prevent spam commentsI just got a mail from one of my subscribers asking me how to prevent spam comments on his blog. Spam comments have gotten so much on his blog that he has literarily stopped posting on his blog. It’s being embarrassing! In this post, I will be show you exactly how you can altogether make blog comment spamming a thing of the past.

I can definitely identify with this guy. When I started blogging newly, I used to get countless spam comments every single day.

Can Akismet Prevent Spam Comments?

I know what some of you are thinking: Akismet can definitely take care of the spams. If you are thinking that, then it’s either you have not been blogging for long or something your blog is being protected by some kind of invisible power from spam comments.

There are two major things wrong with Akismet:

  • I found out that several spam comments find their way into my blogs and that means that I have to spend extra time deleting them to keep my blog posts neat. Who has  got that can of time especially with my epileptic internet connection. I have more productive things to do.
  • Some of my regular commentators were getting flagged by Akismet as spammers and I just hated spending a lot of time deleting the spam comments and retrieving the genuine comments.

Some others use Conditional Captcha. The good thing about it is that the spam from bots will definitely be a thing of the past. However, the human commenters will get through. It can also be something of a hassle. I assure you that many readers won’t bother with a captcha code.

A Plugin That Would Prevent Spam Comments

It’s called GrowMap Anti-Spambot PluginIt was created by Andy from CommentLuv.

This tool is really powerful! I have been using it since early 2011 and it’s amazing. It’s friendly to everybody: to the commentator and to the blog owner.

See what others have to say about the Plugin:

“I wanted to say that with a previous plug-in, I had 400+ comments ‘lost’ and I am certain all of those 400+ were not spam. I installed the GASP plug-in and immediately, got 10+ comments, good comments, through successfully! This plug-in WORKS! Thank you for creating this plug-in!” ~ AIDYs Poetry Blog ~

“I got a lot spams in comment especially from spambot, akismet and recaptcha couldn’t handle it, and this plugin make it work.” ~ jevuska, WP Themes Designer in Indonesia ~

“After testing out the GASP plugin for a few weeks, I can honestly say that it works, and I do mean works. I have had zero, zilch, nada, nothing, not a single spam comment within those few weeks. The best part is that without Akismet running, I haven’t had valid comments moved to my spam folder automatically.” ~ Technically Easy Review of GrowMap AntiSpambot Plugin ~

“Took my spam comments down from dozens each day to 0. Just like that! Love it…” ~ Eric Bobrow, computer consultant, California ~

So there you have it: How to Prevent Spam Comments on Your Blog. If you are using the GASP plugin, kindly let us know how it is working for you.

I finally discovered how to eliminate spam comments with no plugin at all, I just REMOVED the ability to comment altogether. It's a little effort to go into the theme code and customize it, but once it's done the spam comments are a frustration of the past and I don't miss them one bit.
