Android, the fastest growing mobile OS in terms of market share, is the most targetted OS since mid-2011, according to a security report. Since 2009, the number of malware targetted at Android has grown by a whopping 400%.
What's more, since Google doesn't police and screen the apps added into the Android Market, you (and Google) have no way of knowing whether that cool, new app with multiple recommendations is infected with a trojan or not. Apple PowerBook G4 17inch laptop battery ,
Chances are that unless you suspect fishy behaviour and report the app for Google to check, the malware app will just fly under the radar and continue to exist as a legitimate download option on the Market. Other mobile OSes may be lesser at risk compared to Android, but they aren't 100% safe without security software. Sad but true.
The scariest news of all is that malware makers have recognized the sheer scale of opportunity and incentive in targeting mobile devices, especially when awareness levels of potential hazards among smartphone users is at such a record low. Security experts are HP Pavilion ZV5220CA battery ,
unanimous in their opinion that 2012 will be a breakthrough year for malware scams on smartphones. James Lyne, director of technology strategies at Sophos, believes that we are only at the beginning of this wave of malware attacks targeted on smartphones.HP Pavilion ZV5325CA battery ,
The potential risks of having your smartphone exposed to a scam/malware attack are greater than you ever imagined. For we are not only carrying a substantial portion of our identity and personal files (photos, videos, etc.) on our smart devices, Asus Eee PC 1015T laptop battery ,but sensitive work documents, business intelligence and corporate data is equally at risk due to the growing acceptability and increasing complexity of monitoring and securing an armada of different smartphones at work places -- it's an IT manager's worst nightmare.
Hence, most of the times, the onus is on us individual users to secure our smartphones to safeguard our personal and professional data. There's no dearth of suitable software, if you know what to look for either. There's a bunch of free antivirus apps to choose from on the Android Market or any app store specific to your smartphone's OS. Since paid subscriptions to most popular security apps only cost about Rs. 500 or so,Acer Ferrari 4002WLMi laptop battery , securing your smartphone is quite cheaper than your PC. The peace of mind ensured by having an antivirus app running on your smartphone is worth the trouble of hunting it down and installing it on your mobile device.Acer Ferrari 4002 laptop battery ,
I totally understand that coding and spreading a malware on smartphones is substantially difficult than attacking Windows PCs, but the threat persists and by all indications it's only going to rise. So do yourself a favour and protect that smartphone.Couldn't find the perfect gift forAsus Eee PC 1016 laptop battery , your beloved this Valentine's Day (and are still alive)? Looking to gift or use a hot pink digital music player? If you said yes to any of these questions, then Transcend's better-late-than never launch of the Digital Player MP330 should interest you greatly.
Available in three capacities – 2GB, 4GB, & 8GB – the Digital Player MP330 is more than just an MP3 player, as it supports a variety of audiophile formats, including WAV and FLAC. It also supports WMA and WMA-DRM10 files. The MP330 player supposedly also features a "high signal-to-noise ratio of over 90dB to deliver superior audio output quality."Ferrari 4001 laptop battery ,
The Digital Player MP330 could be looked at as a value-for-money audiophile device, and apart from wide format support and enhanced audio quality, it offers users up to seven advanced equalizer presets to choose from, as well as a custom, user-defined equalizer.
Sporting USB 2.0 connectivity, the Transcend Digital Player MP330 is priced as seen below:The last couple of years have been tough for Research In Motion (RIM), to say the least. They have lost market share quite rapidly. The rivals - Android,Fujitsu FM-43B , iOS and even Windows Phone have taken the OS game to the next level. The "iPad" beater Playbook bombed rather badly. The root cause of RIM's troubles in the smartphone market has been the company's ultra slow response to the threat of Android and iOS. Well, threat they were 2 years back. Now, them rivals are well and truly ahead. Time to wake up and play catch-up!Dell SQU-724
Advertisement.Samsung Notebook Series 5Ultra thin and Light | Large storage capacity up to 1TBWithout a shadow of a doubt, this year is very critical for the survival of RIM.
Though the road to redemption is a long and hard one, we think here are the five things they can do immediately. After all, they have to start somewhere.
Acknowledge and (attempt to, at least) understand the rivals' game: For years, RIM clearly refused to acknowledge the existence of competition. And even remained in different stages of denial when the competition overtook them. FUJITSU LifeBook T580 Tablet PC laptop battery ,What RIM needs to do this year understand what the competition is all about - a sizing up mission, if you will. See what is challenging their still solid domain of enterprise services. Getting email on phones isn't the miracle as it used to be.Dell SQU-722 ,
However, RIM needs to defend its vast enterprise demographic. While the existing tie-ups aren't going anywhere anytime soon, newer additions might slow down considerably. Simply because Apple, Google and Microsoft are ready to stick their foot in when the door opens. Agreed, it is a little late for all this, but better late than never.Dell Latitude D531N laptop battery ,
The Grown-up phone? Teenagers' phone? Fujitsu FM-43A ,
Or both? Decide now: The idea is for RIM to identify the user demographic it wants to target.FUJITSU LifeBook T580 laptop battery ,Think RIM, and immediately the Blackberry totting business user comes into mind. However, off late, what equally comes to mind is the teenager - someone who likes boasting about the number of friends he/she has on BBM (Blackberry Messenger). Nothing wrong with targeting different sets of users. But, RIM needs to decide whom all it will focus on, and offer products that have feature sets similar to what the rivals offer. Without blurring the primary focus on enterprise and business. And at prices specifically tailored for the different demographics.Dell Precision M65 laptop battery ,
At the moment, to do any bit of data on a Blackberry phone, you need a separate data rental plan - Rs 129 (BBM only), Rs 299 (email and BBM) and Rs 399 on prepaid/ Rs 599 on postpaid (email, BBM and full web browsing). Except the Rs 399/ Rs 599 plan, all other plans are handicapped in terms of services on offer. The smartphone doesn't feel very smart then, eh?ACER BT.A1003.002 ,
Update: RIM has announced on Friday that they will now not focus on the consumer market, and return to their primary market - the enterprise. Well, easier said than done, considering even the enterprise has solid alternatives in Apple's iOS and Microsoft' Windows Phone. We would like to see how that pans out. But going back to the stronger demographic is, at least on paper, the correct thing to do.ACER BT.A1003.003 ,
Get Blackberry 10 out as fast as possible: Last year, we saw Blackberry OS6 and OS7 on various devices. Two OS versions within one year would have been a great achievement for anyone, but in reality, they were like an old wine in a slightly newer bottle.HP HSTNN-UB09 ,And twice of the same thing. More than anything, RIM needs to decide what BB10 will be as the final product, and finalize the initial bunch of smartphones (We are hearing about the Blackberry London). In an environment where rumours on the Internet turn out to be true more often than not, we get precious little about BB 10. Except about delays and no concrete details on the possible launch timelines.HP HSTNN-UB17 ,
Close the chapter on this book: Despite having excellent hardware and a neat OS, the lack of integrated email client (something that a Blackberry device looks incomplete without) and the dearth of good apps are the primary reasons for the failure of the PlayBook. For a package that was inferior to the iPad 2 and most high-end Android tablets, RIM priced itself out of the game.HP HSTNN-MB10 ,
The Playbook OS update does set a lot of things right - integrated email, SNS integration and Android apps, if only a handful of them. However, BBM is still absent on the tablet, and that shows RIM is struggling but unable to find a solution.HP HSTNN-OB17 ,
What also hurt RIM was the shift of energies from phones to the tablet, for most part of the year. Eventually, didn't gain much in the tablet market but lost a lot in the smartphone one. This year, they do not need to do anything radical. Just close the chapter on this version of the PlayBook. Don't innovate unnecessarily, keep it simple and ensure that the apps ecosystem is ready.
Focus on quality, not quantity: From the trend we witnessed last year, RIM seemed to be betting on numbers in the smartphone market - "the more phones out there, better the chance of people liking at least one of them" logic. Not the best way to go about it. Asus NBP12A100 ,We are hearing that instead of launching BB 10 later this year on two phones, they are instead focusing on just one phone (codenamed London). Smart move, and should be the path they walk this year. And the next.Having recently reviewed the Zebronics Zebmate Cinema 3.0, and complained about the lack of touchscreen capabilities, I am happy to see the Zebmate Cinema 4.3 arrive for review. This is the Cinema 3.0, plus quite a bit more. Let's find out how good this actually is.HP Pavilion ZV5200 battery ,
First Impression: It's all plastic
The Cinema 4.3 is dressed in black coloured plastic, which is thankfully matte finish. The front panel does not have any buttons around the 4.3 inch touchscreen. The left panel has the 3.5mm headphone jack, the TV out port, microSD card slot and the miniUSB port. The rear panel has the speaker, and the top panel has the power on/off button.
Performance: Where's the punch?Asus L0690L6 ,
The Cinema 4.3 promises a lot on paper. The 4.3 inch touchscreen is much bigger than the smaller and non-touch versions offered by most rivals in this price bracket. The touch response works well, and the screen has enough real estate space for precise finger touch. The resolution of 480x272 is enough to allow for an okay-ish video viewing experience.
FM Radio capabilities are a part of the device, but in areas where the reception is a bit patchy, this one won't work very well. There will be a lot of shrieking and screaming, but not too much of the radio will be heard! The audio player has the usual gamut of features, including the EQ settings. However, what we noticed is the fact that the audio is a lot sharper than expected. We were using high end headphones, but the sharpness was hurting a bit more as the volume went up. Dell NGPHW ,,
Rock EQ settings were the best option, because the Dynamic Bass Boost settings actually managed to make the audio sound as if it is coming from behind a pillow- stifled. With radical upgrades to the Nano and TouchApple M9756J/A , happening, it was only fair that the smallest member of the family receive its share of attention too. For many, the Shuffle represents the entry into Apples domain of portable multimedia players, although with the lack of a display, the Shuffle has always been a music player, unlike the Nano,
Classic and Touch that handle photos and videos among other niceties. The Shuffle is also the most affordable Apple PMP, and while there are cheaper MP3 players out there, few have the style or compact dimensions of the Shuffle - in fact, this little fellow has spawned countless look alikes. Understandably, we had high hopes, and in most aspects, the Shuffle didn't disappoint. Remember - we said most!Acer UM09H41 ,
Look and feel
Like it or not, the compactness of the device is undeniable. The Shuffle is super tiny, and owing to the aluminium chassis, it feels extremely rugged, and should easily survive a drop, should you be perverse enough to subject it to a one...or many. Dell Latitude D531 laptop battery ,
The front has a large circular, clickable control pad that surrounds a large center button. The control pad is made of plastic - the only non-metal component on the device. Basic media controls play/pause, track change, and volume controls are located on this pad. HP Pavilion ZV5000 battery ,
On the top are two steel-finished tiny controls, that despite being tiny, are pretty usable. To the left of these is the 3.5mm jack. The rear is dominated by a large clip, with a rather strong spring - the Shuffle will happily clip on to belts, collars, and pockets, heck the darn thing is so small, you can keep it just about anywhere. At 12.5 grams, the Shuffle is a feather-weight.
The main controls are well laid out and quite intuitive, as expected from fifth generation product that has seen numerous refinements and tweaks. The top controls, (the steel ones we mentioned earlier), consist of a 3-position slide-lock button that controls power, Acer Ferrari 4000 Series laptop battery ,
and the play order (shuffle or in-order). The button this slider is new, and what Apple calls a "voice over" control. It can work in three different ways, reading out current track and artist name at a single press, a long press gets you information about multiple playlists and two quick presses gives battery information. All this data is read out to you, obviously trying to make up for the lack of a display, which is a nice touch.Dell 312-0207
It's available in some swanky colours as well. We prefer the suave looking silver one, although blue looks nice too.Fujitsu Laptop Battery
It is obvious to see the Shuffle has a basic feature set, and is definitely not for geeky folk. Rather its for people who just want music on the move without the frills of a fancy interface, or even a display. Lack of FM RadioAsus Eee PC 1016PE laptop battery ,Asus Eee PC 1016PEB laptop battery ,is a huge minus in our opinion, since many people wanting a basic music player typically expect FM Radio support.
We fault Apple's logic of offering FM Radio on a costlier model with a display, and omitting it on a music-only device.DELL Alienware M15x battery
We'd have loved a 4 GB version as well, but there's only 2 GB - more of Apple-trickery - you want more storage, buy a Nano. For someone spending money on a budget Android tablet, the choice is quite wide, but there is no real clear winner on what to buy. For those amongst you who rely on benchmarks as a crucial criterion in a buying decision, the series of graphs below pitting the tablets against one another in multiple benchmarks should help.Lenovo/IBM Laptop Battery

Also, do note that certain tablets did not get any score in the Peacekeeper benchmark. The reason for that is, despite multiple attempts, the browser kept crashing during the test.Toshiba Laptop Battery
The HCL Me X1 tablet (read our review) did not get any score for LinPack, Antutu and GLBenchmark. The reason for that is simple - HCL have removed access to Android Market and their own custom app store does not have these benchmark apps available. As a rule, we download the latest versions of the benchmark before running the tests. ViewSonic Viewpad 7e (read our review) faced the same issue with GLBenchmark.RELATED STORIES:Asus Eee PC 1016P laptop battery ,

The so-called Google glasses were seen in the wild. Or were they? And what would they really be used for if they did exist? Nothing you could tell your mom.
Apparently Scoble ran into Brin wearing some glasses the other day. It's immediately assumed these are the much ballyhooed Google glasses with their heads up display – like the ones in the video. On the display you can watch a movie, do a video chat, send e-mail, see streaming stock quotes, be alerted to important email. Everything except get Google ads, an oversight that I suspect will be corrected soon. One can only imagine what life would be like in a Target store that could communicate with the glasses.
